As parents, we’ve all been through the draining process of taking in new information. Students face a lot of distractions today – gadgets, peer pressure, extracurricular activities, and sometimes family problems.
With everything that’s going on, we should not let those distractions keep our children out of focus. Parenting is not only about letting them be what they want to be, it also about making them ready for the obstacles that they are about to face in life. That’s why in this article, we came up with six study hacks to help your child ace his next exams.
1. Establish a distraction-free environment.
There are several types of distractions that can keep your child from studying effectively. Nowadays, mobile phones and other gadgets are to blame. Ask your student to switch off his mobile phone, put it on silent, or turn off the Wi-Fi router.
Your child’s studying environment should also be quiet and fit for his studying needs. The study area should not have TV, game consoles, and other entertainment appliances that might tempt your child to play instead of study. Make sure it is quiet – pets and siblings are not allowed.
2. Use mnemonic devices and mental associations.
Acronyms and abbreviations are there for a reason and that is for people to memorize groups of words easily. They can also be referred to as mnemonic devices. This study technique can be used when you are given a list of names that you have to memorize. For example, you can take the first letters of each word and make a new sound or word out of it.
LASER – Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
ROYGBIV – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet
PEMDAS – Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction
Sounds, scents, flavors, feelings, movements, and photos can be used when taking in large portions of information. Songs, for instance, are considered as a mnemonic device. If your child is currently memorizing the periodic table, this song might help him.
3. Make your student listen to the right kind of music.
While some students prefer a quiet study environment, other students study while listening to their favorite playlist when preparing for an exam. Most of the time, a good song puts us in the mood to accomplish anything.
Ask your child if he likes listening to something when he is studying. Is it a certain sound like rainfall? How about classical music? It is ideal for your child to listen to instrumental tracks while studying so that the words won’t distract him. Here is a playlist on Spotify that contains calm and study classical music. 4. Feed right and sleep tight.
Bright students have sharp memories. Eating the right kind of food and sleep at the right time are keys to having an effective brain. Make sure that you serve a hearty breakfast that will give your child a good kick start all throughout the day. Cereals with milk and a banana is a perfect student breakfast.

5. Be your child’s student.
Let your child be the teacher. If you can fully understand what he taught you, it means that he is ready for the exam. Answer the mock test together. Your child is ready if he can explain the meaning of a certain word to you and give examples about it. Tell him to practice what he has learned from his class lessons. Create flash cards with him and take turns when giving answers. This can also be a form of quality time for your family.
